Learning the smart way

Classroom or formal learning sessions seem to becoming a thing of the past, as cloud is paving the way for more interactive learning techniques. I am sure we have all experienced those stuffy classrooms situations, bulk brought sandwiches that have seen better days and swapping small talk over extra strong coffee, but we are now seeing workplace training delivered the smart way – via the cloud.

As we see the work environment changing and the adoption of remote teams, so trainingcompanies are having to wise-up to how they deliver training en-mass, whilst allowing employees to take control of their own learning experience. Theresa Durrant, Head of Operations at Resource On Demand, said this “Self-service learning allows employees to break their learning down into more bite-sized chunks. They can gain access to their training material in an environment and at a time that is convenient to them. Long gone are the days, when we would see half of the office out on a training session, which can be highly disruptive to the productivity of the company and for its individuals”.

Research shows, that interactive learning is also key when it comes to delivery of training. Unfortunately many training programmes are often one-size fits all, but we recognise that everyone learns at different rates and usually relate to a variety of materials. Training that includes as many different materials as possible, such as short videos, formal presentations, online questionnaires, role play, online collaboration, mobile apps to list a few, tend to be more successful than those that have only one type of approach.

Durrant went onto say “We encourage our employees to access their training material online, and by providing them with a variety of different materials. As a result, individuals are more incentivised to learn, as they work at a pace that suits them and with materials and devices they are familiar and comfortable with”.

Previously, momentum of training would have been a big issue for companies, as they struggle to encourage individuals to continue their workplace learning. But with the rise of trends like ‘gamification’, it is becoming easier to encourage employee buy-in. Using technology to publicly reward employees who complete training modules is a great way to encourage them to continue on their learning path; whilst using friendly competition encourages the people around them to also start their learning journey, which is usually the hardest hurdle to cross.

A big plus for the cloud way of learning, is that it gives individuals a channel to supply feedback and have their say, again great for continued motivation. Plus, the cloud material means that changes and improvements can be implement very quickly, with little additional cost to the company, ensuring that your training programmes are always effective and relevant for the target audience.

7 Signs of a Good Recruiter

As a job seeker it can often be confusing and frustrating when it comes to using external agencies. So how do you go about selecting the right agency to partner with, when it comes to making your next career move.

1. Setting benchmarks

Firstly, you need to know that your recruiter is going to add value to your job search. From the outset they should be honest and upfront with you, establishing a benchmark for what roles will be of interest and how best to submit your CV.

2. The bad as well as the good

Whilst some recruiters can shy away from delivering negative feedback, to the point that you never hear from them again – the sign of a good recruiter are those that are willing to discuss negative comments as well as the good. Good recruiters understand the importance of learning from past mistakes and will be invested in helping you to improve your application skills so that you don’t continue to repeat them.

3. Nothing wrong with a past

If you have identified a company that you would consider working for, you should try to establish if your recruiter has successfully placed people with them previously. Past success with the company in question will be useful in establishing if your recruiter has some influence and the right connections to make sure your application will make it to the right people within the organisation.

4. No gaps, please

salesforce recruitmentRecruiter history with a company, is particularly important when it comes to filling in the gaps in your knowledge and research. We all know that competition can be fierce on the job market, and that researching a company ahead of your interview is paramount in showing competitive advantage, but a good recruiter who has a solid relationship with their client should be about to furnish you with useful information and insights into the company that go beyond what is mentioned on their website. This will include the cultural makeup of the company, along with information on the types of people they hire.

5. Who needs a job description?

Whilst a job description is useful in identifying some of the skills needed for a role, they often do not allow for individual personalities that might be able to offer more than just technical skills, and end up just looking like a shopping list. A good recruiter will have already established a relationship with key players within an organisation, to the extent that they will know what personalities will get on well, and those that will clash. Plus they would have taken the time to understand the cultural set up and the company motivation factors for hiring.

6. Been there, got the T-shirt

Whilst your recruiter does not have to know everyone personally within an organisation, it is helpful if they have been on-site, or at least to one of the company sites. It is amazing how much you can learn from an organisation by observation, such as how the teams interact and the company ethos, which again cannot be learnt from a job description or website.

7. A recruiter is for life

If you are fortunate enough to land that dream job, it can often be the case that you never hear from the recruiter beyond the first three months of employment. However, good recruiters are those that are interested in your long term aspirations and will continue to support you beyond the initial honeymoon period.

Spare a thought

Whilst job hunting can be all consuming, please spare a thought for your recruiter. It can be easy to shoot them down in flames when they don’t provide feedback immediately, or fail to find you, your next placement, but more often than not your recruiter is putting in a lot of effort behind the scenes for very little recognition;

- So, if you recruiter maintains contact with you – despite not giving you feedback on your application, the chances are they have not received feedback from the company in question.

- If, your recruiter manages to secure you lots of interviews, that do not go beyond the first stage, have you been really honest about your level of skills.

- If you fail to show up for an interview without a justifiable reason, consider what your recruiter might have been through to get you to interview stage in the first place.

- If you are inconsistent with your salary or job expectations, consider how this might jeopardise the recruiters relationship with their client.

Customer Company Tour Highlights

The ROD team had a great day at the Customer Company Tour last Thursday, meeting up with many familiar faces and making a few new acquaintances along the way.

If the name did not give it away, then to reiterate, this years’ Salesforce.com tour saw us deviate from an emphasis on consulting. Instead, it focused on products and mobile business apps, in an event that was clearly aimed at businesses, and for business of all sizes.

Salesforce.com’s COO, George Hu, kicked off the event with a great keynote speech. Plus there were breakout sessions galore, enough to tickled even the seasoned ‘taste buds’.

ROD’s Director, Theresa Durrant, popped along to a few of the sessions, taking in a great demo by Quinto Wall, about how salesforce is leveraging the power of mobile business apps, by making them more accessible to businesses, and faster.

Plus, the ‘Introduction to Visual Force Pages’, was a great hands-on experience for those wanting to find out more. And, if you missed out on these, then you could always collect your three free Apex and force.com workbooks.

The Developer Theater also proved popular, with plenty of useful tips, tricks about best practice guidance…if you were lucky enough to get a seat, or at least a good standing room only spot, that is. Let’s not forget the mini hacker hubs, which were heaving, throughout the day.

Salesforce Customer Company Tour GuidedogAnd if the sun, or a tasty barbecue were not enough to tempt you into a fun mood, then there was certainly one corner that guaranteed to put a smile on your face, as event go-ers interacted with ‘man’s best friend’. The sensory Tunnel for the guide dogs, proved the biggest hit of the day, as we frequently witnessed people being led around the venue, blindfolded. Hopefully, our four legged friends, were rewarded with a juicy bone for all their efforts.

If you missed the keynote speech, you can catch up here.
