How the Cloud Changed the World’s Oldest Newspaper

Computer World recently published a very insightful article by Bernard Golden, regarding how The Daily Telegraph embraced Cloud Technology to cut costs but also to increase the offering that they provide to their readers. He writes:

The most fascinating presentation of the event was by Toby Wright, CTO of the Telegraph Media Group, publisher of the Daily Telegraph, the oldest continuously publishing newspaper in the world. Wright presented a cloud adoption strategy that was compelling, to say the least.

As background, it’s no secret that the newspaper business is in a terrible state. My local paper, the San Francisco Chronicle, suffered something like a 30% drop in circulation over the past five years. The Telegraph is also suffering a continuous shrinkage in circulation as well. So when Wright took over responsibility for IT, his first task was cost-cutting. His next was changing the way IT works at the Telegraph, and cloud computing is a central part of that process.

I was struck by how much the Telegraph is “living the cloud vision.” While other companies are performing cloud strategy assessments or implementing pilot experiments, the Telegraph is moving headlong into an asset-lite, cloud computing future.

Configuration vs Coding

We have often been asked by candidates what do our clients think is the best approach and our answer is usually that neither is right nor wrong. Each method has its own benefits and characteristics.

Configuration can often be the quickest and cheapest way of providing a quick fix solution, although the down side is that whilst it gets the ball rolling (so to speak) it might not always do everything that you want it to. Configuration, if done well is a good place to start and can offer a good level of functionality, but if not carefully designed at the outset could lead to issues when trying to expand functionality or processes at a later date.

Coding a solution on the other hand, provides a ‘blank canvas’ approach making ‘anything’ possible, but it can lead to a lengthy and much more costly solution. Whilst development of a solution using an ‘Agile’ approach can help towards mitigating the size of development projects and in turn cost, ongoing enhancements usually require more resources and budget then configuration.

In essence your assessment of whether to opt for either the ‘coding’ or ‘configuration route’, should clearly take into account all factors, such as required functionality versus budget versus time frames versus short, mid or long term future evolution. And key to getting it right is to ensure that time is taken over requirements gathering and design of the businesses processes, before making your decision.

Why pay to use an external consultant when we can self implement…?

…is a question often asked by those businesses new to salesforce.com.

The simple answer is “You do not have to, you can self implement if you wish”

It is true that companies have the option to self implement salesforce.com, however the reality is often that the required skills and knowledge do not exist internally within the business to make the right initial decisions about the system set-up. Extreme care should be taken when making initial system set up decisions as this hugely affects the value achievable from using salesforce.com.

Salesforce.com is extremely powerful and can greatly benefit business of all shapes and sizes, however the set up decisions made in the first few hours of use will have a great affect on that value. New salesforce.com users will have a much more successful time with salesforce.com if they consult a knowledgeable, experienced consultancy in getting the right foundation in place from day one.

We’d love to know what you think and what your experience has been. Either leave a comment below and/or vote using the poll to the right.
