A career within Salesforce.com development

Salesforce DeveloperFollowing on from our last article about a career in Salesforce.com, this time around we explore the role of a developer. Here at ROD we deal with various salesforce.com end-users and ISV, so we know first hand, what skills they are looking for within their Salesforce.com Developer jobs. But, before becoming a Developer it is recommended that you learn Salesforce.com as an Administrator first and then progress to become a Developer. Even the best developers will agree with this!

By now you should really have some understanding of visualforce, basic knowledge of the apex language and how to create complex workflows and business processes from your time as an administrator. Experience tells us that people who are passionate about programming, often dabble on the developer platform outside of work creating apps. And the more complex they are; the better!

What does a Salesforce Developer do?
Salesforce.com Developer jobs vary from company to company, but the common responsibilities running through them include:

  • Developing cloud applications, mainly through Force.com
  • Perform technical evaluations, solution and design approaches to client solution needs
  • Perform detailed analysis of business and technical requirements
  • Write technical approach and design documentation
  • Develop, test & release Salesforce.com CRM components and products

What skills are required of a Salesforce Developer?
In order to be a Salesforce Developer you must be systematic, process driven, extremely logical, and have excellent problem solving skills. You will be able to develop complex solutions and have a deep fundamental knowledge of data manipulation.

What can you expect to learn?
You will gain experience in designing and optimising business processes as well as integrating business processes across disparate systems. You will also gain an understanding of the software development life-cycle using core methodologies, such as Agile. You will learn to implement complex solutions and integrate into third party platforms and web applications.

To certify or not to certify?
Without doubt companies will like people who clearly invest into self-development and this is clearly reflected in the number of Salesforce.com Developer jobs requiring certification. So if you have the means and time to obtain certifications, this will always be a big selling point! There are three main Developer certifications you can take; the DEV401, DEV511 and DEV501 (advanced certification).

If you are looking to take your certification, then take a look at our resources section on our website, to find exam study guides and tips on how to prepare for them.
