The tale of two events

What a fantastic June the ROD team are having…if I don’t mention the World Cup, that is! This month, saw London play host to two great events, the 6th Annual Cloud World Forum and Internet World. And, whilst we enjoyed cosying up to the latest hardware and software, it was Big Data that firmly caught our attention. The master classes, in particular were exceptional, such as the Hadoop Master Class presented by Big Data Partnership and the CTO Master Class from SEPAM Group.

We also went on a whirlwind tour of data analytics, listening to case study File Sharingafter case study, on how real-time data reporting and analytics is the key in the fight for competitive advantage and customer engagement. Data is also proving extremely useful in answering tough questions in today’s society, plus in helping us to fight against global disease and illnesses.

It is not just the big issues, where data analytics and insight has proven its worth, but also in much smaller local issues, such as diverting traffic during congestion times, or how real-time reporting can influence manufacturing and product lines, or help insurance detect fraud, thereby reducing premium costs.

Among the exhibitors were the usual gathering of giants such as IBM, HP, Dell and Cisco, but this year we also saw a number of much smaller new entrants, as well as public cloud providers, such as; AWS, Google and Microsoft Azure.

Plus we also looked at the changing roles for the CIO, as they are now taking on the role of educator within the enterprise. Their future will morph into becoming experts in technology integration, service brokerage and highlighting security issues and compliance amongst users.

The hands-on learning sessions as always proved a big hit with visitors keen to try out some new skills. And, I am sure at one point, I saw a scuffle over a bean bag at Internet World, that Luis Suarez would have been proud of.
